Have you updated your cell phone software lately? This is especially important on smartphones, which essentially operate as mini-computers. If it’s been a while since you last updated, continue reading to find out more about the benefits of updating frequently.

The other day I received a text that completely froze my smartphone. I have one work phone and one personal for the time being, but this was still extremely frustrating. Once I turned the phone off and on a few times (this process feels like it takes years on a Blackberry), it finally worked again.

After this happened a couple more times over the weekend, I realized I hadn’t update my phone’s software in a while. Having been preoccupied with my newer work phone, updating my old Blackberry completely slipped my mind.

This is one example of why you should keep your phone updates; here are a few more:

• Updates solve problems. Many times, software updates are created to specifically address issues that slipped through during initial development. This could include freezing (similar to my case above) or other basic functionality issues.
• Added Features. Sometimes updates are created to add extra features and functionality to phones. For example, one of Apple’s iPhone updates in the past enabled users to download music directly from their network, compared to Wi-Fi only.
• Maximize service and power. Other updates contain software fixes to help enhance the current hardware. One example is increasing battery life. These updates can also help phones reach a better signal, thus, having less interruptions during calls.

Unfortunately, not all updates are error-free. Many providers have experienced post-update issues that are not corrected until the next update is released. While we recommend keeping your phone up to date, this is just something to keep in mind.
