It’s been about a six months since I starting my weekly blogs at Make It Work, and I’ve definitely learned a lot. Blog posts aren’t just little pieces of writing that someone reads; they’re important, especially for businesses.  There are several important elements necessary to write a blog post that people will want to read; it may not be as easy as you think.

There are many keys to writing a successful blog post. The most important objective is grabbing the reader’s attention, and there are numerous ways to do that.  First, your title should jump out at the reader.  Don’t use just any boring, simple two-to-three word title, but rather a nice juicy one with interesting words.

Second, you should start the post with an attention-grabbing sentence; I love to start of with a rhetorical question. Pictures and formatting are also key. You might have a great post, but if the pictures are poor quality and the format looks bad, chances are you will be less popular amongst readers.  When formatting your post, make sure to: fit the picture in the text (wrap the text around it), have meaningful pictures representative of the material, and make sure your text is bundled, without random spaces between words.  Although grabbing the reader’s attention is the main factor to consider while writing a successful blog post, another important aspect is the character of the post. Don’t create a grocery list (as my teachers would say).  Rather, find a way to write with style.  In other words, get personal; relate to the readers, share a personal story, or add a joke or two. You want to make the blog post exciting, more than just a list of facts with no character.

The final important aspect of writing a successful blog post is choosing your topic. Based on my personal writing experience, you want to choose the best current trending topic.  But a word to the wise, make sure you are interested in the topic, or that it’something that you want to at least learn about.  Write about a topic you find interesting, or something that has your attention; this will be much better than one that bores you to death! Choose your topics wisely.  Readers can sense if you’re not really passionate about them.
