Organization is awesome. I love it. In-fact I am bit OCD for it. It is similar in proportion to my need for symmetry in all things. My iPhone apps are placed in such a way that their colors have symmetry, buts an entirely different blog post.
Keeping yourself clutter free is a great way in making your iPhone experience even better. iOS4 brings many much needed changes, which range from multitasking to folder management. However, folders though simple, are a great, easy to use feature that I am excited to show you right here.
First you will have your home screen. For simplicities sake I have all my social networking apps brought to the first page of my iPhone.
Now that you have that, we will enter the app editing mode by holding your finger on any app. You should see little X’s in the top left corner of each app, also they will be shaking back and forth. Notice the top two rows of apps do not have X marks. The reason for this is they are default apps that can’t be deleted, but they can be moved or put in folders.
While the apps are shaking, hold your finger on the app you want to add to a folder and drag towards another app that you will want to add to the new folder. In this case I have held down my Twitter app and placed it on my Facebook app.
With your new folder, apple will give it a name by default. This will be a generic name and may not exactly apply to all the apps that you have in the folder. But don’t worry! You can edit the name in the white text box. In my case I named the folder Social Media.
Clicking the bottom of the screen then returns you back to the app editing mode. This new folder of yours appears in the list with the name you gave it, and the small app icons are featured on the folder. At this point you can add more apps. I choose to also add my Foursquare app.
To remove apps from the folder, click the folder and simply drag the app’s icon to the main portion of the screen and let go. It will nestle itself back in the page.
Folders make your life so much easier. Both in the file cabinet and on the iPhone. Organization is a beautiful thing. Enjoy this quick ten second tip from Make It Work.
