The Apple iPad is the forefront of tablet technology.
Released in April of 2010, Apple sold 3 million iPads in 80 days, and has had a steady sale of 1 million per month since…and we haven’t even gotten to the holiday season yet!
And with no prominent competitors in the past four months, Apple’s success still remains unchallenged.
Or does it?
The iPad runs on an operating system similar to that of an iPhone; so where’s the tablet with the Android operating system?
Well, although there are a number of up-and-coming Android based tablets, like Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, it seems that Apple’s biggest competitor will be Google’s Chrome OS-based tablet for Verizon. Hitting stores Black Friday 2010 (November 26th – the day after Thanksgiving, hailed as the biggest shopping day of the year), Google’s Chrome OS tablet will feature the new Chrome App Store, which lets users access to a new array of apps in addition to the existing Android App Store. The new App Store is expected to draw much interest from the developer community due to its minimal commission rate of 5%. According to Reuters.com, “The fact that Google is reportedly planning to charge just 5% commission on Chrome apps, versus the 30% that Apple charges, suggests Google is gearing up to go after the iPad and iPhone in an aggressive way.”

Another thing that suggests a head-on attack is the rumored price of the tablet – $0.00 (Free- with a new contract to Verizon that is!). Having a shiny new Verizon tablet on the shelves during the holiday season will be sure to attract many buyers, and possibly even take a chunk out of Apple’ iPad sales on the biggest shopping day of the year.
So keep your eyes open this holiday season for all the new products in the tablet department!
