In honor of Martin Luther King Day, today we’re exploring what success really means here at Make It Work. MLK believed in non-violence. He had an idea and devised a strategy to accomplish it. Based on his actions, he’s considered to be one of the most successful people involved in the Civil Rights Movement.
For Make It Work (and myself), success is something we are always hoping to understand and achieve. Of course, this is much easier said than done. We all have different goals and a different vision of what we want in our lives.
Society’s definitions of success are countless, but some of the more commonly discussed ideas are the following:

-Making money
-Having a family
-Buying a home
-Having many friends
-Finding happiness
-Getting a college degree
-Running a marathon
Arguably, some of the above definitions are more important than others. Not everyone hopes to have a family, or even own a home. As the decades pass, many people have shifted focus to their careers, and thus define their success by the amount they have achieved or the amount of money they secured in their latest business deal. It would be silly to rank the importance of goals; the importance will always be in the eye of the beholder.
One thing that all of these definitions of success have in common is their core purpose. Sometimes we tend to focus on the outcome so much that we forget why we got involved in the first place.
In my experience, I best measure my success by my ability to reach my goals. For me, it’s not a matter of knowing everything, but more importantly, having the ability to access the proper people and tools who will help me get where I want to be.
