In April, Sony announced that it’s PlayStation Network had been hacked (we talked a bit about it here). Between 70-100 million PlayStation users had personal information vulnerably exposed to the unidentified hacker. The hacking took place from April 17th-19th. As a PlayStation user, I have to say it was a real drag to be hacked like this. I couldn’t even sign in to their account because it would just say “PlayStation network is currently undergoing maintenance.” After seeing this message for a few days in a row, I became frustrated, angry, and also just mostly curious.
After a few long weeks of waiting, Sony finally announced that the restoring of The PlayStation Network would be complete in the next few days. Many people are still curious about how such a big company got hacked so badly. First off, the hacker must have been especially intelligent, as he must have spent time looking into it, but more importantly, how did Sony’s security let this happen?
I’m concerned, like many, because this hacker had access to all of my personal account information; everyone’s was accessed. When you first sign up for the network, it asks you for information such as: date of birth, where you live, your email, phone number, and many other personal questions.
As far as I’m concerned, Sony needs to make some big changes, or else the company risks losing many PSN users. In the announcement about the restoring, Kazuo Hirai said that Sony is making user-protection their number one commitment, worldwide.
So what should you do?
Well, reset your password for starters. Sony shut down their server early Monday due to the amount of password resets, but this is the most important step you can take to protect your account from future hacking.
