When my dad was in school 30 years ago, he didn’t have to worry about his parents seeing every single grade he received. They only saw the final grade, not all the little or big grades that add up to it; He could have a rough start, but finish the class with flying colors. His parents never had to know about the bad start!
Today, with Edline, parents see every little or big grade.
Thanks to Edline, if I miss a homework assignment, it shows an “F”, and it looks way worse than it is, even if it’s only worth a point! Every time a new grade comes in on Edline, a notification is sent to my parents. As a result, they pretty much know everything, and it doesn’t reflect the big picture. My experience in Spanish class is an example of how Edline is not always accurate. I hadn’t done two presentations in class yet because either the class ran out of time, or my teacher hadn’t called me up yet. On the grade book, it shows up as two 0 out of 50s, which obviously brings my grade down drastically! Unfortunately, my parents are able to see that on Edline, and tell me “Jacob, you have problems,” even though the notification is obviously inaccurate. It gets really annoying! I’m sure all of the adults reading this didn’t have their parents reading their grades every time a new one came in.
Personally, I am glad to have Edline, but it would be better if only I could check it. I am sure many of you reading this had a few bad grades once in a while when you were in school, but your parents never saw them; You could succeed class without having your parents monitor every speed bump you hit along the way. In summary, yes, Edline is great tool to help students to monitor their progress in class, but not so helpful for parents to know their children’s every move in the classroom.
