In the debate about cable vs. internet TV, we tend to mention Netflix quite a bit. While you may be familiar with the company, you may not know everything they have to offer.

Netflix has become a powerhouse, competing with satellite and cable companies, as well as video streaming websites like Hulu (and Hulu Plus) and Amazon. Let’s discuss how and why Netflix became such a big deal.

Movies delivered to your door

Netflix became popular by allowing customers to create online queues of movies they’d like to see, and shipping the DVDs quickly to their doors. With a large array of movies, this shook up companies like Blockbuster and Hollywood Video (now out of business), as Netflix quickly became easier and cheaper.

Streaming videos, anywhere

This is the not-so-hidden gem of Netflix. For $7.99 a month, Netflix provides a video streaming service, offering over 100,000 movies and TV show episodes. The amount of content is growing quickly. For example, the company announced a partnership with Miramax to offer movies like “Good Will Hunting” and “Pulp Fiction.” (source: The Wall Street Journal)

Streaming content is available to subscribers anywhere; ss long as you have an internet connection, Netflix’s selection is constantly at your fingertips. For this reason, many have decided to discontinue their expensive cable subscriptions in favor of watching comparable content online.

TV manufacturers have also embraced this trend. Smart TVs with access to the internet are starting to populate consumer markets.

In older blog posts, I’ve examined numerous ways to save money, but I’ve finally decided to take the plunge myself. I will be cancelling cable this week in favor of internet streaming content…I’ll let you know how it goes.
