You have an iPhone.

You can’t find the ringtone you want…or at least the part a song or sound that you like.

You don’t want to spend the money buying a software program that helps you make ringtones…You shouldn’t have to. Well, fret no more!  Here is an EASY step-by-step guide to becoming an iTunes Ringtone Producer!

*NOTE: Depending on which version of iTunes you have, certain steps will differ.  The iTunes 9.0 version and up changes will be address inside [brackets].

1. Open iTunes.
2. Find the song that you want to make into a ringtone.
3. Listen to the song and find the part of it you want to use.
4. Write down the start and stop times of the clip.
5. Right-click the song and select “Get Info.”
6. Click the “Options” tab.
7. Type in the start time of your ringtone in the text box next to “Start Time” in the minutes:seconds (i.e., 2:01) format.
8. Type in the end time of your ringtone in the text box next to “Stop Time.” Make sure the ringtone is no more than 40 seconds long.
9. Click “OK.”
10. Right-click your song again and select “Convert Selection to AAC.” Wait for iTunes to convert your song. It will create a duplicate version.   [NOTE: In the newer iTunes 9.1, you will have to go to Preferences -> General -> Import Settings and change the Import Using: field to  AAC Encodingfirst.  Then to convert a selection to AAC, go to Advanced -> Create AAC  Version to create a duplicate version of your clipped song.]
11. Click n Drag the duplicate version on to your Desktop.
12. Right-click the ringtone within iTunes and select “Delete.”
13. Click on the “Keep Files” button when prompted.
14. Go to the file on your desktop.  It will have an extension of m4a.
15. Replace the m4a extension of your ringtone with m4r. You can either double-click slowly to rename your file, or right-click and select “Get Info” on a Mac or “Rename” on a Windows PC.
16. Click “Use .m4r” or the PC equivalent when the system warns you that the change may affect the use of your file.
17. Double-click the ringtone file. ITunes will automatically add it to your ringtones folder in your iTunes Music Library.  (If you don’t have iTunes set up to automatically copy files that you add to the library, you will have to manually move that file into your iTunes Media folder before double-clicking on it)
18. Connect your iPhone and sync your ringtones.

Voila! You are now an iPhone Ringtone Producer!
