As technology progresses, the amount of personal information we send electronically increases. We have become routinely comfortable with this under the impression that having a password on our network will keep prying eyes locked out. However, one would be shocked at the ease of which hackers can gain access to this data if your network has not been properly secured. AirTight Networks conducted research in 7 major cities and discovered that around 57% of networks were using WEP encryption. Did you know that WEP passwords can be compromised in around 3 minutes? That means that 57% of those networks surveyed were not safe against wireless attackers. Once this password has been discovered all data passing over the network can be recorded and reviewed, even data from devices that are hard-wired to the router.

One type of attack allows passwords sent to websites to be viewed, even those which use encryption called SSL (such as Facebook, Gmail).  This also includes IM conversations and images viewed on the web. Although this probably makes you feel uneasy, it can be prevented by changing the security settings on your router. WEP encryption is outdated and should not be used. At the minimum, WPA security with a password of at least 10 characters is suggested.
