Technology is constantly changing. It’s important to make sure your security settings are up to date to prevent hackers from finding easy and nearly undetectable ways to access your personal information and get into your accounts.
It’s important to stay on top of security by following the latest news, watching for suspicious behavior, and updating your security settings whenever possible. Here are some of the most important security concerns to consider before the end of the year.
Password-protect your wireless internet
While wireless internet networks are extremely convenient, they are much less secure than traditional wired networks. It’s important to encrypt and password-protect your in-home wireless network.
For example, if your wireless internet network is WEP-encrypted (Wired Equivalent Privacy), it is still not completely secure. Hackers who know what they’re doing can find encryption information in a matter of minutes.
WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) or WPA2 tend to be more secure by dynamically changing the code that hackers need to access your network.
Watch for email/social network phishing
The best advice we can give on this topic, since email hacking is constantly evolving, is to watch for suspicious emails. If you see something that doesn’t sound legitimate, do not click on any links. You can also try Google searching some of the words in the email to identify it as spam or phishing.
Protect personal information on your smartphone
As with all devices connected to the internet, your smartphone can be vulnerable to security issues. While apps for Apple’s iPhone tend to be a bit more secure, numerous malicious Android apps are downloaded to Droids everyday.

Update your email/account passwords
You may have noticed a little notification pop-up on your Gmail account, prompting you to change your password if you use it for multiple internet accounts. Make sure to keep your passwords as secure as possible, using numbers, capital letters and symbols when possible.
