Yesterday, Apple’s Tim Cook announced the release of the iPhone 4S. Having the iPhone 4 already, I was curious to hear what they’ve added or changed with this model. I have a feeling I’m not alone in wondering if it is worth it to switch to the 4S. There are a few things to consider when deciding if it is a good idea to upgrade.
The folks at Apple insist that the smartphone is completely different on the inside, although it looks exactly the same on the outside.
Let’s look at some of the changes:
A5 dual-core chip: The old iPhone 4 has an A4 chip, and Apple claims this will make the device twice as powerful with seven-times fast graphics
Camera upgrade: The new phone has an 8MP camera instead of a 5MP version. The camera also allows for shooting in 1080p instead of 780p. Additional features like added face-recognition, illumination and stabilization are also in the new device.
Storage: The new smartphone boasts 64mb of storage space, double the size of the largest iPhone 4.
No Antenna Issues: Apple claims to have figured out all of the past antenna issues that were a problem with the last version in the 4S.
iOS 5: Notably the biggest upgrade of all, the 4S comes pre-loaded with iOS5. read more about the new software here, but keep in mind the upgrade will also be available for iPhone 4 users.
The Siri voice recognition software would be a significant upgrade, but we are not sure if it will also be available on the last model.
All in all, these changes and upgrades are significant, but not overwhelming. Yes, the camera is better, along with the storage space, but we’re just not convinced an upgrade is necessary.
Another important thought to consider – the iPhone 5 could come out fairly soon, and it will likely be more worth the wait.

The 4S although an arguably good upgrade for iPhone owners simply does not include enough to warrant an upgrade for me from my version 4. The upgrade to ios 5 will easily hold me over till the announcement of the sixth generation iPhone 5.
