Slow internet is never fun. But how do you find out if your service is less than what the cable company promised? Speedtest.net is a great resource to find out the true speed of your internet connection. This website loads up quickly and is pretty simple to use; within a couple of seconds you could be on your way to getting a better idea of your internet situation.Speedtest.net will measure two different factors – upload speed and download speed. Your upload speed, put simply, is the rate at which you send information to someone else. Your downloading speed is conversely the rate at which you take information from another entity and put it on your own computer.
Note: Before you start, make sure you are not downloading anything while you are running a speed test, it will skew the information it provides.
So let’s begin!
Go to Speedtest.net in your favorite Internet browser, I am using Firefox. You should see a gray screen with a black map and what appears to be car gauges. Choose which location on the map best fits your location, or use the yellow location they choose for you, which appears on the top edge of the map; in my case it’s Los Angeles, CA.
Wait while Speedtest.net calculates your upload and download speeds. After you choose a location, this will happen automatically. The gauges will move to mark the progress of your test; this will take only a few moments.
