Every year Apple holds an exciting media conference in which they unveil new products and goodies for the upcoming seasons, and this years demonstration was no disappointment! Here’s an overview of what’s to come:
iPod Touch
Apple’s iPod Touch is a mega-seller. Accounting for 50% of the portable gaming market, Apple claims that their “iPod Touch outsells Nintendo and Sony combined.” So what’s driving these sales? Virtually unlimited apps and games, internet, camera, and music in your pocket can’t really be beat. But with ever increasing technology, Apple likes to keep its products top of the line.
The new iPod Touch boasts the glorious Retina Display, as introduced to the iPhone 4, as well as a front facing camera and an even slimmer body. But fear not, the slimmer design doesn’t compromise its power. The rear facing camera gives you the ability to shoot HD video straight from your phone, and the front facing camera brings you FaceTime.
iOS 4.1
Along with the new iPod Touch, Apple has just announced iOS 4.1, featuring a number of bug fixes and some pretty notable additions. Those fixes include solutions for the proximity sensor issue, Bluetooth, and iPhone 3G performance, while the new features include High Dynamic Range photos, HD video uploads over WiFi, TV show rentals, and, at long last, Game Center. Game Center boasts a range of new capabilities for multiplayer gaming, including the ability to challenge friends, keep track of scores, and new ways to find games. This will be available in the coming weeks.
iOS 4.2
On the heels of 4.1, this November will finally bring the iOS family together with the release of iOS 4.2 (this will be a free upgrade). iOS 4.2 will bring all of the iOS 4 features to the iPad, including multi-tasking, Game Center, folders and threaded e-mail. iOS 4.2 will also include wireless printing, a highly anticipated feature.
iTunes
Apple couldn’t possibly forget their widely renown music playback software: iTunes. Except this time, they’re giving it a makeover. For the first time in a long time, Apple has changed the iTunes logo. iTunes 10, still “Coming Soon” will also offer many more new features besides a new icon. Most notably is their new music based social network: Ping. Built in to iTunes, it will allow you to follow artists, create a “Circle of friends,” post comments, check out custom song and album charts, and find concerts. And, of course, Ping will be available on the iPhone and the iPod Touch.
Apple TV
Guess who’s baaaa-aaaaack? The new Apple TV is back and better than ever. Streaming fast and clear at 720p, Apple says that “Using 720p allowed them to strike a balance between quality and bandwidth.”
iPod Classic
And lets not forget about our old pal, the iPod Classic. Steady as ever, the new iPod Classics come with the same old features, just with more bang for your buck. Improved hard drive space and reading speed goes along with the iPod Classic way.
iPod Nano
Apple’s new iPod Nano has a completely new design! The new buttonless, touch-screen iPod Nano will cost $149 for the 8 gigabyte version and $179 for 16 gigabytes. Like previous versions, the Nano has a built-in FM tuner and can display photos.
New iPod shuffle
Apple has launched a new version of their tiny music player, the iPod shuffle. The new shuffle resembles the design of the second generation model but is slightly smaller. You can now use your own headphones with the player which wasn’t possible with the previous generation model. The new shuffle retains the Voiceover functionality which tells you which song, album or playlist you are listening to. The latest shuffle also supports Genius playlists.
